Winter is in full swing, but even for those living in a snow climate like Utah, that doesn’t mean you have to completely abandon all landscaping elements. Consider an item like garden planters – if these are made of a solid material, you can absolutely leave these out for the entire winter season and create a great aesthetic for outside your home, particularly if you have vertical coverings in some areas.

At Greenside, we’re here to help with this sort of outside-the-box thinking. Let’s go over a few ways you can spice up your design and make garden planters the foundation of your winter landscaping efforts.

Low and Anchoring

A low, shallow container in the garden, perhaps on a patio wall pillar, is a great focal point for the garden. It’s great for virtually anytime people are outside, without standing out too much or blocking any other elements. Consider plants like coralbells and poppies to offer a variety of foliage and texture.

Mix Highs and Lows

Summer is a great time for high plants in garden planters, and some of these can remain during winter. You want to combine these with mid and low plants that will drip over the side, like ivy or vinca. Look for ways to vary up the colors and textures here, and infuse the look with a few flowers whenever the weather permits temporarily.

Herbs and Willows

A great way to add the kind of height we discussed above is by using pussy willow branches, which offer both height and interest. Consider complementing them with herbs like chive, sage and even parsley where appropriate.

Cool Spring, Hot Colors

We’re a ways away from spring at this point, but it’s never too early to think about what you’ll have in store once the thaw rolls around. Most expect a cool spring, which is perfect for planters. Consider daffodils, hyacinths, and other bright flowers to make the cool season really pop and stand out.
